Notice-Forest Digital Twin Project
Yuken Teruya + FIKA
In my "Notice-Forest" series, a tree stands inside different consumer paper bags -- for example, Vuitton, Hermes or McDonald’s bags. I cut out the shape of tree branches and leaves on the top side of paper bags. Then sculpting a tree from the cut-out, the tree stood in the bag. The bag not only suspends the cut out of the tree but actually combines with the tension of the tree to hold the bag up. The central idea is to bring life back to the tree from the paper surface -- and it's an example of how the colour design of the bag can make you think of the tree inside the space. I take inspiration from Aristotle's philosophy of nature. An acornhas both an actual form and a potential form to become a sapling and an oak tree. The acorn-- and my sculpture -- is a microcosm of the initial tree's strength. So the trees are "portraits." with each referencing a specific, existing tree from a photograph that I'd taken. (Yuken Teruya interview, part)
Renowned artist Yuken Teruya presents his captivating Notice- Forest series, a thought-provoking blend of art, nature, and consumerism. Teruya skillfully crafts delicate paper trees, each intricately placed within discarded shopping bags from prominent brands like Vuitton, Hermes, and McDonald's. These mass-produced paper bags symbolize the rampant consumer culture and the detrimental impact of globalized multinational corporations on our planet. In stark contrast, the meticulously crafted paper trees represent the vulnerability and fragile ecosystem of nature, distorted by human activities.
Inspired by Aristotle's philosophy of nature, each paper tree serves as a portrait of a real tree, referencing specific trees photographed within the artist's neighborhood or near the shop where the bag originated. Since its inception in 1999, the Notice Forest project has grown to encompass over 100 unique pieces, capturing the essence of trees and their intrinsic strength.
Teruya's vision for the project expanded further when he envisioned creating life-sized installations, allowing audiences to experience the artwork from within the paper bags, gazing up at the enchanting trees.
Through the Notice Forest Digital Twin Project, Teruya takes the Notice-Forest to new heights, imbuing it with greater symbolic significance.
Audiences are invited to immerse themselves in the very essence of this creation, which also serves as a tribute to our intertwined existence with nature. Originally conceived as a concept for public art, Teruya envisions that the Metaverse, being a nascent public realm, offers fertile ground for the realization of this vision. It opens up the opportunity to reevaluate and experiment with our understanding of life's relationship with nature in the virtual domain.
Ultimately, this concept seeks to provide viewers with a profound sense of dwelling within the artwork as a dome. Teruya picked the notion of a dome, recognizing that beyond its physical presence, domes can also be used metaphorically. They are not only symbols of shelter and security but also carry religious significance. It may symbolise the culmination of human knowledge or the pursuit of intellectual and spiritual enlightenment, with the idea that the dome represents the apex of understanding or realisation.
After a fortuitous meeting with Hasegawa of FIKA, the concept took a remarkable turn towards the digital realm. SOU (FIKA) embarked on a year-long collaboration with the artist, resulting in the birth of the Notice Forest Digital Twin Project.
Utilizing the 3D model of Teruya's Notice-Forest: Tiffany’s & Co. (2017), made from cuts on paper and glue, the team created a digital twin with more than 55 different models, varying in colors and textures. This newfound digital realm grants boundless possibilities, allowing audiences to scale and interact with the models. Users can transform them into houses or galleries, place them on serene beaches or in the heart of desolate deserts, and even climb the virtual trees or strings, immersing themselves in the captivating artwork. (The artwork needs to be put in any metaverse, such as the Spatial)
With the Notice-Forest Digital Twin Project, Teruya and his collaborators aim to disseminate their powerful message to as many people as possible. The urgency of the project has never been more apparent, as it addresses critical global issues with artistic finesse. By embracing digital innovation, the team seeks to reach broader audiences, inviting them to ponder the delicate balance between humanity, nature, and consumerism.
Join us in exploring the mesmerizing world of the Notice-Forest Digital Twin Project, where art transcends its physical boundaries and blends seamlessly with the digital frontier.
